The oil-painted portrait is a tradition passed on through centuries of artists.  The connection made between artist and subject has stood the test of time and survived through the photography and digital age.  The person who commissions an oil painting is continuing a conversation with art history that has existed since the first marks have been made on canvas.

The Process

The portrait painting process is a collaborative effort, and so ideally we meet in-person at my studio in Toronto where I can show you a portfolio of sample paintings.  It is important to see actual size paintings and compare them with your own space so that you are not over or underwhelmed by the final painting size.

During the initial meeting or at a later date we will have a casual photo shoot where I will take high-res references from which to create the painting.  I will suggest poses and the atmosphere is very relaxed - no need to be a professional model!

Once the photos are taken I will create several sketches and we will work via email to review and refine the final piece.

In circumstances where we are not able to meet in person I am more than happy to work from your favourite personal photos.

Ah! Portraiture, portraiture with the thought, the soul of the model in it, that is what I think must come.
